Ralph D. Smith

June 16, 1918 — March 21, 2014

Ralph D. Smith, age 95, of Hot Springs Village, passed away Friday, March 21, 2014. He was born June 16, 1918, in Binghamton, New York, the son of the late C. Douglas Smith and Bessie Ralph Smith. On January 18, 1944, he was married to Dorothy Alice Pattillo, affectionately known as "Dot", who preceded him in death on August 25, 2013. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), and a member of the Church of Christ. After retiring in 1979 from Ling Temco Vought in Dallas, he and Dorothy relocated to Hot Springs Village, where he spent many happy years golfing, volunteering at the Garland County Library, and briefly working in Real Estate. Ralph was an avid Bible scholar and attended a Men's Bible Study in Hot Springs Village. As an avid reader and list maker, he kept a list of every book he had ever read. With his self-taught knowledge of the computer, Ralph had his own blog and Facebook page. His hobbies included photography, taking photos of nature, working the New York Times crossword puzzles, always completing them in ink; traveling and delving into genealogy and family history. While Ralph enjoyed many hobbies during his lifetime, there was never a doubt the greatest love in his life was his church and family. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and dearly loved each and every member of his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and cherished him for his quick wit and words of wisdom. His love and legacy will carry on in each of their hearts forever. He is survived by three children and their spouses, Ron and Kay Smith of Wylie, Texas; Linda and Jack Gardner of Glenwood; and David and Betty Smith of Little Elm, Texas; five grandchildren and their spouses, Chad and Mary Gardner, Joel Smith, Amanda Smith, Lauren and Lindi Smith and Natalie Smith; three great-grandchildren, Brooke, Trey and Parker Gardner; several nieces and nephews; and a host of wonderful friends. Memorial services will be at 2:00 PM, Monday, March 31, 2014, in the Church of Christ at 112 Mockingbird Lane in Hot Springs with Ardie Brown officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Church of Christ, 112 Mockingbird Lane, Hot Springs, Arkansas, 71913 or to the Garland County Library, 1427 Malvern Avenue, Hot Springs, Arkansas, 71901.
