Alice Duff Cockrell, age 92, of Mount Ida, died Thursday, March 8, 2012. She was born on September 4, 1919, in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of William Duff and Alice Gertrude Sullivan Duff. She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Helen Clinger; and her son, Rex Cockrell. Although female horse jockeys weren't allowed in the United States in the 1940's, she was employed as a horse jockey in Mexico during World War II. She had a love for all animals. She is survived by her daughter, Rita Whisenhunt of Glenwood; nine grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Patty Wilson of Cleveland, Ohio. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 10, 2012, in the Fancy Hill Cemetery with Father Norbit Rappold officiating.
