Anna Rose "Smittie" Farmer, 82, of Little Rock, Arkansas, passed away on Monday, October 15, 2012. She was born September 5, 1930 to the late Lory L. Smith, Sr. and Ione Josephine Smith in Shreveport, Louisiana. She graduated from Byrd High School in 1947 and attended the IBM Special Data Entry School, also in Shreveport, graduating in 1951. Anna began her career in Data Processing with the Interstate Oil Pipeline Company in 1947 and worked several years before starting a family and moving to Little Rock in 1962. She became a volunteer at St. Vincent's Hospital and was an active member of her church and the schools where her three children attended. In 1972, she resumed her career with the National Old Line Insurance Company in Little Rock, before moving on to McLarty Leasing Systems, Inc. She ended her career with the Arkansas State Crime Lab, where she retired in 1996.
"Smittie", as she was fondly called, was always known for her friendly and caring nature by all of her friends and coworkers, but her children and grandchildren remained her primary focus throughout her career and during her years of retirement. She was always ready and willing to give of herself in both times of need and in times of celebration as well, and will be dearly missed by all who came to know her in this life.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Lory Jr. and Bobby Joe Smith. She is survived by her two daughters, Ann Cottrell (Will) and Kay Carle; son, Mark Farmer (Sandra); grandchildren, Mitchell Farmer (Tiffany), Alex Carle, Wesley Farmer, Hunter Carle and Christian Carle; great-grandchildren, Ashlynn Farmer, Brayden Gallegos and Avery Worthey; and a host of nieces and nephews and their children.
The family would like to express their love and appreciation to the extraordinary staff at the Arkansas Hospice Unit of St. Vincent's Hospital in Little Rock.
A service will be held on Monday, October 22 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 1000 N. Mississippi, in Little Rock, officiated by Rev. Danny Schieffler. Honorary pallbearers are Mitchell Farmer, Wesley Farmer, Hunter Carle and Christian Carle.
