Barbara Sue Kilgore, née Brandt, passed away on May 30, 2026, at the age of 83. Born on May 24, 1943, in Carlisle, Arkansas, Barbara lived a life defined by love, service, curiosity, and devotion to family. She was the kind of person who made others feel welcome, cared for, and valued. Her door was always open, and her heart even more so.
Her life was marked by both intellectual curiosity and a deep commitment to serving others. Early in her career, she worked as a biochemist in research at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Later, answering a different calling, she became an ordained United Methodist minister and devoted decades of her life to pastoral care, guidance, and community service.
Whether in the laboratory, the church, or her own home, Barbara approached her work with the same compassion, dedication, and desire to help others. She believed in the value of every person and spent much of her life supporting those in need of encouragement, comfort, or simply a listening ear. Her life’s work reflected a rare combination of scientific inquiry and compassionate service — first seeking to understand the world, and later dedicating herself to caring for the people in it.
For 52 years, Barbara shared a devoted marriage with John Robert Kilgore. Together they built a life centered on family, mutual support, and enduring love. Through triumphs and hardships alike, they remained steadfast partners, creating a home where family always came first and where friends, neighbors, and even strangers were welcomed with warmth and generosity. Their marriage was not only a lasting commitment but the foundation upon which generations of family were built.
Few things brought Barbara more happiness than her family, her garden, and caring for the people around her. She had a gift for nurturing life — whether it was a flower bed bursting with color, a struggling friend in need of encouragement, or a family member looking for guidance.
If you became part of Barbara’s life, you quickly learned that she was always willing to help. Barbara’s love was expressed through action. She showed up when people needed her. She listened. She helped. She remembered the details that mattered. She found joy in giving of herself and in seeing others thrive, and the impact of her kindness rippled far beyond her immediate family, touching countless lives over the years.
She was also known for her remarkable organization and thoughtful nature. Ever practical and caring, she took steps to make difficult moments easier for those she loved, reflecting the same sense of responsibility and devotion that guided her throughout her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John Henry Brandt and Pluma Odene Brandt, née Oliver; her brother, Edward Brandt; and her sister, Cheryl Prince, née Brandt.
Barbara is survived by her husband of 52 years, John Robert Kilgore; her daughter, Allison Wingfield, and grandson, Jay Wingfield; her son, John Patterson Kilgore, and grandson, Ezekiel Kilgore; her son, John LeDonne; along with many extended family members and dear friends.
She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, generosity, resilience, and unconditional love.
A visitation and celebration of Barbara’s life will be held on June 5, 2026. Family and friends are invited to gather, share stories, and remember a woman whose greatest joy came from caring for others.
Few people leave the world better than they found it in quite the way Barbara did. She nurtured her family, cultivated beauty in her garden, and offered kindness freely to those around her. If you crossed into Barbara’s life, you became someone she cared for.
Though she will be deeply missed, the love she shared, the lives she touched, and the example she set will continue to grow for generations to come.
We love you, Mama.
