Bessie Jean Stewart

Bessie Jean Stewart was born on June 17, 1951, in a small farming town in Clarkedale, Arkansas to the late Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Stewart. In 1969, Bessie graduated from J.S. Phelix High School in Marion, Arkansas. Shortly after receiving her diploma, she moved to Chicago, Illinois in an effort to pursue her goal of becoming a nurse. She succeeded and was employed by Grant Hospital in Chicago. Longing to be close to her parents, she returned to Arkansas. Her qualifications opened doors to Baptist Medical System in Little Rock.

Wanting to serve those who have served our country, she united with the VA Hospital in North Little rock. After years of hard work and dedication, her health began to interfere with her ability to perform at her best, ultimately forcing her to retire.

With time on her hand, she developed a green thumb for growing houseplants. They became like her children, flourishing as if to show their gratitude for her care. Alongside her love for plants, she adopted a furry friend, whom she lovingly named Chance.

One Sunday, Bessie visited the Johnson Street Church of Christ at the invitation of a good friend. That visit marked the beginning of a newfound church family, where she embraced the role of "Greeter"; offering a warm smile, a hug, or handshake as members and guests entered the House of Prayer.

When that welcoming beacon was absent from her post, Pastor Threatt and Brother Calvin visited Bessie, offering prayer, solace, and encouragement. Yet, that beacon had been placed in the care of a higher power. Bessie knew God was with her, even to the end of her journey on December 25, 2024.

Bessie is survived by her daughter, Lisa Stewart (Marcus) Whitaker; grandchildren: Jaylen Stewart and Cortlynn White; step-grandchildren, Marcus Whitaker, Jr. and Tyler Whitaker; great-grandson, Jaylen Stewart, Jr.; and siblings: Randall Stewart, Jessie (Charles) McKenzie, Joe Stewart Pitts, Eddie Williams, Annette Stewart, Mary Louise Brown, Robert (Mildred) Stewart, Billy Stewart, and Clyde (Garnett) Stewart. She is preceded by her parents, Josie Mae and W.T. Stewart and her brother, Terry Stewart.

A visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 AM on Thursday, January 16, 2025 at Johnson St. Church of Christ, 101 Johnson Benton, AR. Followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. Bessie will be laid to rest at Marion Memorial Cemetery in Marion, AR following services.
