Billy Gene Mitchell, 98, of Maumelle, passed away on March 31, 2020. He was born in Paragould, AR on March 29, 1922 to Shubie and Anna Mabel (Caldwell) Mitchell. He was an Army Air Corps Veteran.
After graduating early from high school, he attended Arkansas State Teachers College (now UCA) for two years during which time he earned his private pilot's license. With this license, he entered the Army Air Corps during World War II as a pilot with the rank of Lieutenant. His most notable assignment was to fly supplies across the Himalayan Mountains (ie. "Hump Pilot").
After receiving his discharge from the military, he began his lifelong career of manufacturing agricultural chemicals. This career included the startup of several companies, the largest of which was Helena Chemical Company in 1957.
Billy loved to travel the world, play the trumpet, sing, play cards, and of course, he never lost his passion for flying.
He is survived by his children, David Mitchell (Lynda), Brenda (B.J.) Saunders (Ken), and Timothy Mitchell all of Maumelle. He is also survived by stepsons, Sheldon Brown (Billie) of Tennessee and Kevin Brown (Kay) of Florida; daughter-in-law, Leslie Brown; grandchildren, Brady Bratcher (Charissa), David Mitchell II (Tosha), Timothy Mitchell, Kimberly Mitchell; step grandsons, Jason, Austin and Blair Brown; several great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Betty Lou Garrett of Pine Bluff.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Mildred Brady, second wife, Betty Mitchell, brother, Gomer Mitchell, son, Joseph Mitchell, stepson, Eddie Brown, and grandchild, Jenna Grandbois.
Due to the Corona Virus pandemic, a memorial for Mr. Mitchell will be held at a later date.
