Carl and his devoted wife were married May 27, 1960. He and his bride resided in Wichita, Kansas for several years while he worked at Boeing as a machinist. Together they built their home and started growing their family. Carl and his wife moved their family back to his roots in Arkansas where they continued raising their four daughters and working together constructing houses. Carl also helped to build some commercial buildings and many single-family homes that are scattered throughout Hot Springs as well a variety of bridges built for subdivisions and family land. When they were not building, you could find them working in the garden, hayfields or camping. Their camping trips included many a boat ride with lots of water skiing and water tubing involved. Carl taught many enthusiasts how to ski, most of which were successful. Carl also loved moving dirt and cutting hay with his tractor. He loved exploring the outdoors which included activities such as hunting, fishing, hiking and exploring the woods and mountains. Carl obtained his pilot license and for a time he would fly his family on short excursions to Northern Arkansas and Haysville, Kansas. He was quite skilled in building and crafting things that ranged from a windmill that powered a lightbulb, utility trailers, a welder, a sorghum mill and to the delight of everyone a set of train cars for his four-wheeler to pull his beloved grands all over the land.
Building alongside his children and grandchildren on their school projects was something he looked forward to and gained much pleasure from sharing his knowledge and passion for invention and creativity. His most popular invention according to his grandchildren, great grandchildren and church community was the six-car passenger train that was a popular attraction on the farm and church events.
Carl was an adventurous soul testing the boundaries such as launching his boat in the family property pond, making wine from his vineyard of muscadine grapes, making lye soap, and burning up his wife’s blender while making peanut butter. Carl and his “mini-chefs” and other willing participants enjoyed making biscuits, sour dough rolls, cookies and home-made ice cream. His energy and passion for learning, exploring and inventing was aspiring and also entertaining at times.
