Charles, known to some family members as Russell, started his working career as a carpenter with his father. He then spent several years in the furniture manufacturing business. He later was employed as a district route manager for the Arkansas Democrat newspaper. He lived the majority of his life in the North Little Rock area with his wife of 61 years Hazel.

Charles loved music and collected records since his childhood. He also was a huge fan of old western movies and had a collection of those as well.
