Charles R. Shelton, 81, died on Friday, May 22, 2009. He was born August 9, 1927 in Little Rock, Arkansas to Lynn and Louise Johnson Shelton. He retired as Vice-President of Trust at Federal National Bank of Shawnee, Oklahoma after a 39 year career at Worthen Bank & Trust Company. "Uncle Charlie" was a 33rd Degree Mason, Past Master of Western Star Lodge No. 2,a member of the Scottish Rite Consistory, member of Geyer Springs United Methodist Church for 52 years and a past President of Pulaski Heights Lions Club. He was a veteran of WWII, having enlisted in the Navy on his 17th birthday and eventually participated in the invasion of Okinawa. His powerful hands, craftsmanship and lifelong collection of tools often masked his skill as a poet. Charlie possessed a mastery of the English language and seldom left a blank in any crossword puzzle he worked.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Katherine Kelly, Barbara Stewart and Billy Shelton. Charlie is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lillian Reynolds Shelton, who so inspired the family with her unfaltering support of and love for her husband through his final earthly days. In addition to his wife, Charlie is survived by daughters, Becky Young and Susie Shelton; sons, Rick (Dana) and Dan (Susan); grandchildren, Joe Young (Emily), Robin Jones, Haley Shelton, Natalie Shelton, Hannah Shelton and Daniel Shelton; great-grandsons, Zak Jones and Tyler Thibeau, all of Little Rock; brothers, Claude Shelton (Mary) of Arlington, Texas, Bob Shelton (Hilde) and Larry Shelton (Cyndi) both of Little Rock; sisters, Mary Gotelli (Ray) of Phoenix, Katie DeBoard and Lynnda Lynch, both of Little Rock, and Laura Sellers of North Little Rock; a host of loving nieces and nephews and a wealth of friends. Charlie leaves a legacy centered upon his faith in God, a vibrant work ethic and a long history of service to others.
His family will receive friends on Monday, May 25 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Little Rock Funeral Home, 880l Knoedl Ct. (NW corner I-630 and Barrow Rd.), Little Rock. A service will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26 at Geyer Springs United Methodist Church, 5500 Geyer Springs Rd., Little Rock, 72209. Memorials may be made to the Church or to one's favorite charity.
