Dan Cowling

Dan C. Cowling, Jr., Architect, FAIA, passed away May 30, 2017. Preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen Cowling, he is survived by his sons, Dan Cowling III (Susan), Dane Cowling (Virginia), and Lee Cowling (Karen), and stepson, Mike Davis (Alesa), all of Little Rock; grandchildren, Shannon Benetz, Lauren Rugerio, Catherine Rose Cowling, Christopher Cowling, Sarah Long, Katey Howard and Matthew Cowling; and nine great-grandchildren.

Among Dan's accomplishments, he was an Eagle Scout. He was the first former student of the University of Arkansas to become president of the Arkansas Chapter, American Institute of Architects, in January, 1963. In 1965, at age 36, he was the youngest member of the National Board of Directors to that date; and in 1966, was the youngest Chairman of the Commission on the Professional Society to that date. He was also the first former student of the U of A and the youngest person at age 41 to be elected into the College of Fellows, AIA in 1970. Dan was the Regional Director of the American Institute of Architects for the Gulf States Region.

Visitation will be Friday, June 2 from 6-8 p.m. at Little Rock Funeral Home, 8801 Knoedl Ct. (NW corner I-630 and Barrow Rd.). Services will be Saturday, June 3 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home, officiated by Rev. Don Hall. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Pulaski County, 14600 Colonel Glenn, Little Rock, AR 72210.
