David Gibbs, affectionately known as "Coach," passed away on April 21, 2026, leaving behind a legacy defined by kindness and an unwavering commitment to those he loved. Born on February 2, 1948, in Bakersfield, California, David's life was marked by a profound devotion to his country and family.
David served his nation with valor as a staff sergeant in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His bravery during combat earned him the distinguished Purple Heart as well as the Army Commendation Medal For Heroism.
After his military service, David obtained a Bachelor of Science in Education from Henderson State University. His career as teacher and coach spanned more than three decades, culminating in his retirement from Bauxite School District.
Throughout his life he never met a stranger, always greeting each person with a kind heart and a sense of humor that bridged generations. Compassion defined him throughout his career and his service to the Lord. He was a proud member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Benton.
But…..family was the core of David’s world. His heart belonged especially to his grandchildren, who knew him as “Grandpa David.” He is survived by his devoted wife, Maggie Herrick-Gibbs; his sons Charley and Robert Gibbs; bonus sons Zachary (Jamie) Herrick and Robbie Herrick; an adored daughter-in-law Veronica, and his cherished grandchildren Natalia Gibbs, Anthony Gibbs and Alessia Gibbs, Francesca Gibbs, Natalie Herrick, Aria Herrick, and Holden Herrick. David is also survived by his sister Susan Smith, niece Brittany, and nephew Graham. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Earl Gibbs and Charlene Graham.
Among the fondest memories he carried were those of his Uncle Jerry Abston, his companion and mentor during childhood. David’s roots lie in Duncan, Oklahoma, where he grew up a devoted fan of Boomer Sooner. Upon settling in Arkansas, he expanded his loyalty to the Razorbacks.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Encore Heart Hospital in Bryant, Arkansas, for the compassionate care shown to David.
The community will gather to honor David’s memory with a Rosary on Monday, April 27, 2026, from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m. at Smith Benton Funeral Home, 322 N Market Street, Benton, AR 72015. This will be followed by visitation from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Mass will be celebrated on April 28, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 900 W Cross St, Benton, AR 72015. Burial with military honors will follow at New Rosemont Cemetery, 1010 Military Rd., Benton, AR 72015, beginning at 2:45 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in the form of donations may be made to the Arkansas FoodBank.
David Gibbs leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication that will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be remembered fondly as a remarkable teacher, a valiant veteran, a compassionate soul, and above all, a devoted family man whose spirit lives on in the hearts of so many.
