Listen to Obituary

David Gibbs, affectionately known as "Coach," passed away on April 21, 2026, leaving behind a legacy defined by dedication, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved. Born on February 2, 1948, in Bakersfield, California, David's journey was marked by a profound devotion to both his country and his community.

A proud veteran, David served his nation with valor as a staff sergeant in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His bravery in combat earned him the distinguished Purple Heart as well as the Army Commendation Medal For Heroism. His military experience deeply shaped the man he became—resilient, honorable, and ever devoted to serving others.

After returning from service, David pursued his passion for education, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education from Henderson State University. His career in teaching and coaching spanned more than three decades, a journey that began in the Bright Star School District and continued through Foreman Public School, Springhill School District, and St. Charles. He retired from the Bauxite School District, having become a beloved and respected figure in countless students’ lives. Known far and wide as "Coach," David had a remarkable ability to connect with his students; many still recall how the simple shout of "Coach!" would elicit his immediate, warm response, a testament to the personal relationships he cherished.

David’s personality was as vibrant as his career. He never met a stranger, always greeting each person with a kind heart and a great sense of humor that bridged generations—from children to adults alike. Compassion and kindness defined him, making him not only an exemplary teacher and coach but also a true servant-leader. His servant’s heart extended beyond the classroom and field, permeating his church activities as a long-time faithful member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Benton, Arkansas, where faith held a place of profound importance in his life.

Family was at the core of David’s world. His heart belonged especially to his grandchildren, who knew him as “Grandpa David,” a title he held with immense pride. Distance never diminished his love and connection to his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Maggie Herrick-Gibbs; his sons Charley and Robert Gibbs; bonus sons Zachary (Jamie) Herrick and Robbie Herrick; an adored daughter-in-law Veronica Gibbs, and his cherished grandchildren Natalia Gibbs, Anthony and Alessia Gibbs, Francesca Gibbs, Natalie Herrick, Aria Herrick, and Holden Herrick. David is also survived by his sister Susan Smith, niece Brittany Burks, and nephew Graham Smith.

Among the fondest memories he carried were those of his Uncle Jerry Abston, not only his uncle and mentor but also his closest friend during childhood adventures and mischief. David’s roots in Duncan, Oklahoma, the place where he was raised despite his California birth, remained strong, particularly as a devoted fan of Boomer Sooner. Once he settled in Arkansas, his loyalty extended to the Razorbacks, and he cherished following basketball, especially the excitement of March Madness. His eclectic musical tastes ranged from country classics to the smooth stylings of Frank Sinatra and the energetic songs of Billy Joel. He also delighted in watching westerns, spending time at the beach or lake, and caring meticulously for his lawn—a passion that earned him the good-natured nickname "Lawn Snob."

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Encore Heart Hospital in Bryant, Arkansas, for the compassionate care and kindness shown to David during his final days. Your dedication and support brought comfort not only to him, but to all who loved him.

David Gibbs’s life was a tapestry woven with courage, faith, humor, and deep love. His passing marks the loss of a man who touched many lives through education, service, and family. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Earl Gibbs and Charlene Graham.
