Doris Corpier Warren

Doris Corpier Warren, PhD, a beloved professor and mentor to students of chemistry, passed away on May 22nd at the age of 81. She was born in North Little Rock, Arkansas to parents Marvin and Lois Corpier, and graduated from North Little Rock High School. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1963, and her Master of Science degree in Physical Chemistry in 1967—both from Baylor University in Waco, Texas. She received her doctorate in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Houston in 1975.

She began her career as an Instructor in Chemistry for the, then, Houston Baptist College in 1967.  Following the institution’s name change to Houston Baptist University, she received promotions to Assistant Professor in 1972, Associate Professor in 1976, and Professor in 1980.  She served as Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics from 1997 to 2019, and retired in 2019 as a Distinguished Professor.

In recognition of her superior teaching at the college level in the state of Texas, Doris received the prestigious Minnie Stevens Piper Professor award in 1991. 

Doris served as a research assistant for the National Science Foundation and NASA.  She consulted for various companies including Dow Chemical and Smith Kline Beckman; and, as the Principal Investigator, was awarded research grants from the NSF, NASA, and the Welch Foundation among others. She was named Principal Investigator on more than 19 publications, and gave more than 30 invited presentations on various scientific and science education topics

Dr. Warren is survived by her sister, Betty Corpier Rosen of Wilmington, NC., as well as many beloved friends.  A memorial service is planned for September at Houston Baptist University.
