Dorothy Louise Hendley went to be with Jesus on April 8,2017 . Born
in Big Island, Virginia January 24,1924 to Edward Kent and Mary Lucy
(Goff) Bulis, she was the elder of her three siblings and survived them
all.
She attended M. E. Marcuse High School in Big Island and graduated
from there in 1941. In May, 1944, she enlisted in the United States
Navy. She met Harry Winfred Hendley, her future husband, on Thanksgiving
Duy, 1946, while stationed in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was a
Marine serving guard duty that day at the building where she worked.
Affording her entry to the building, he accompanied her to and, later,
from her office, and that was the beginning of their romance. They
married in New Orleans on 7 June 1947 .
Dorothy served her country admirably while in the Navy, rising to the
rank of Yeoman 1st Class by the time she was honorably discharged on
28 February,1949. Dorothy was an avid reader, a lover of history and
science, and a faithful wife and caring mother.
Dorothy and Harry were divorced in September, 1972. Dorothy
remained un-remarried and the mother of Harry's only children, all four
of whom survive her, to-wit: Mary Lockwood, Arkansas; Suzi (Peter)
Nelson, Florida; Harriett (Richard) Bozora, Georgia; and Harry Hendley,
Florida. Also surviving are two grandsons, Andrew Joseph Townsend
and Philip Jake Nelson; one great-grandson, William Jonathan Nelson;
and her long-time friend, Betty Harrington, Hot Springs. Two sons-in-law,
Laurence Scott Lockwood, Sr., and Joseph George Townsend and
one grandson, Laurence Scott Lockwood, Jr. predeceased Dorothy.
Dorothy will be buried at 1l:00 a.m. on 14 April 2017 in the Arkansas
State Veteran's Cemetery, North Little Rock, Arkansas.
