Ed Flaig

Ed Flaig was born in St. Samarita Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio on July 29, 1920. He was the only son of Lucille Crow and Edward Guy Flaig Sr., both from Danville, Kentucky. He graduated from Withrow High School in Cincinnati and attended the University of Cincinnati. After college he enlisted in the Army Air Corp and was stationed at Patterson Field. He went to officer training school at Miami, Florida and Stanford, Texas. He then helped start the college training detachment at then Ouachita Baptist College in 1943. It was there he met and married Neno Nowlin in March of 1944. Shortly after, he was stationed on Guam. He was issued out of Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel, and settled in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.

Ed loved Arkadelphia and was involved in many civic activities. He was a member of First Baptist Church since 1949. He served as president of the Lions Club, an active member of the Jaycees, the Chamber of Commerce, the Literacy Council and the Arkadelphia Library Board. He always loved sports and voluntarily coached the boys and girls tennis teams during the fifties. He was an avid golfer, playing golf at least twice a week until he was 82. He refereed both high school and college football games for twenty-five years, and during his later years he kept the clock for both Henderson and Ouachita. He enjoyed boating, fishing and spending time on Lake Hamilton with his family. One of his proudest honors was when Kentucky Governor Pete Carroll selected him for membership in the Honorary Order of Kentucky Colonels, and shortly afterward, Governor David Pryor made him an official Arkansas Traveler.

He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-four years, Neno Nowlin Flaig and a grandson, Jim Guy Russell.

Survivors are three daughters, Gay Burch of Hot Springs, Gail Flaig of Arkadelphia, and Sunny Flaig of Los Angeles, CA; son-in law, Dr Lan Burch of Hot Springs; and one grandson, Jarrod Russell of Boston, MA.

There will be a family graveside service 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 27th at Rose Hill Cemetery in Arkadelphia with Dr. Lee McGlone officiating. Memorials may be made to Arkadelphia Library, 609 Caddo St., the Clark County Humane Society, 627 Walnut St. Arkadelphia, AR. 71923 and Odyssey Hospice, 10800 Financial Parkway Little Rock, AR. 72211.
