Edith Cox Owens was born at Steve, Yell County, AR on March 11, 1930. She passed away on December 11, 2020. Her parents were the late Hollis and Jessie Cox. She was married to the late William E. Owens for 64 years. They had one son, Bill Owens.
Mother married Daddy shortly after he returned from Europe after service as an infantryman in WWII. They moved to California. Mother was unhappy there and they returned to AR and lived in North Little Rock for many years. After retiring, they moved to the family farm in Yell County. Mother enjoyed working on the farm. She also enjoyed her many friends and relatives in the South Fourche River Valley.
Mother attended Valley Home Missionary Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School. She loved her fellow church members. She particularly enjoyed when the church gathered with another local church for singing, fellowship and a potluck meal.
Quilting was mother’s favorite pastime. She called it her therapy. At last count, she had hand quilted over 100 quilts and given most of them away. She was working on a handkerchief quilt for her great-niece when she died.
Family reunions were events which mother enjoyed. There was always plenty of food and stories of years passed were shared. They were filled with laughter and joy.
Mother is survived by her son, William E. Owens, Jr. and wife Lyn of North Little Rock. She is also survived by her nieces, Cassandra Cox and Kay Cox of Steve; and Kay’s children, Kate Yates and Callie Brucks and their children, Maddie, Aiden, Addie, Olivia, Jacob and Spencer. She is also survived by her dear cousin, Nan Howard, and her children Mike Howard and Edie Twitty, Nan’s grandson, Dustin Howard and granddaughters, Abby and Hannah Twitty. She is also survived by her niece Barbara Bivens, nephew Larry Robertson, and family friend, Mike Brucks.
In addition to my father and her parents, mother was predeceased by her brother, Earl Cox and his wife, Odessa; her grandparents, Tandy and Nannie Sims, William and Dixie Cox; and her aunts, Faye Yates and Addie Crawford, and uncle, Herbert Sims.
There will be a small private family gathering at Nooner Cemetery for mother’s burial. She will join several generations of her family there. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Valley Home Missionary Baptist Church, C/O Phyllis Crain, 3452 Trail 86, Plainview, AR 72857.
