Ellie Mae Conway Martin, affectionately known as Ms Ellie, was born Nov 12, 1927 in Cypress Valley, Arkansas, the 4th of 5 children to Will and Julia Flake Conway. She and her siblings took great pride in their Conway heritage which included the first Governor of Arkansas, James Sevier Conway and the fifth Governor, Elias Nelson Conway.
She married Jimmy Martin on November 17, 1945 and for 57 years they shared a wonderful life and raised 3 children, Paul, Joanna and Keith.
Jimmy and Ellie moved around the world during his military career with stints in Kansas, Germany, Georgia, and Arkansas.
After settling in NLR, they faithfully served Levy United Methodist Church where they were members for over 70 years. Ellie held positions with Camp Aldersgate, the UMC General Assembly and the Heifer Project and other ministries of the UMC.
Ellie studied Radiology Technology at UAMS and was the Radiation Therapist there for several years before joining Dr. D R Harris in 1976 at the opening of CARTI where she was the Chief Therapist. After retiring from there, she and Jimmy traveled to Torrington, Connecticut where he was transferred with Timex.
She loved hosting her family and cooking big meals for everyone. She was a wonderful cook and she always had enough for everyone. She enjoyed quilting, singing in the choir and taking care of her wonderful plants. She always had the best advice for us and gave it even if we didn't ask. She and Jimmy worked hard to put their kids through college with no debt.
Her joy came from her unwavering faith in God. She loved her family dearly. There was nothing she enjoyed more than spending time with her family and hearing stories about her grandchildren. She chose to see the best and believe the best in everyone. Her love was unconditional and everyone who knew her knew how much she loved them. To her family she was affectionately known as Meem/Mimi.
She will be dearly missed by her family and so many friends at Levy United Methodist and the Lakewood House. We rejoice that her faith has become sight and she is in the presence of her Savior, Jesus Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jimmy, son, Paul, grandson Corey and daughter in law, Janet, and many other family members.
She is survived by children, Joanna (Jim), Keith, 6 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild and many other nieces and nephews.
A special thanks to her wonderful care-givers, Veronica Jordan, Summer Brown and Pam Ford.
