Ethel Wheelis, age 89, passed away on January 27, 2024, with her loving family by her side. She was born on July 2, 1934, in Tupelo, Mississippi, to Guy and Fannie L. Dickerson. Ethel was one of thirteen cherished children.
Ethel leaves behind her devoted husband of 70 years, Jim Wheelis. Their love story began in Lepanto, Arkansas when they were just ten years old. Their bond was unbreakable and truly stood the test of time. Jim fondly remembers the early days when Ethel proudly introduced him to her family as her "red-headed freckled face boyfriend." Throughout their seven decades together, Ethel was a loving wife and grandmother.
In addition to her husband Jim, Ethel is survived by her brother Buddy Dickerson and his wife Sharon Dickerson. She is also survived by her children: Patty Purtell and her husband Terry Purtell, Brenda Wheelis Vandament, Mary Catlett, Linda Douglas, Guy Wheelis and his wife Jet Wheelis, Daniel Wheelis, Peggy Hackett and her husband Wayne Hackett; as well as her daughter-in-law Kim Smith.
Sadly mourned are her two sons who preceded her in death: Jimmy DeWayne Wheelis and David Glen Wheelis.
Ethel lived a life dedicated to God and her family. She was known for being a devout prayer warrior and had a deep love for reading God's word.
A visitation has been scheduled for Monday, February 5 at 12:30 p.m., followed by a service at 1:30 p.m., both to be held at the Smith Little Rock Funeral Home. Pastors Barney Fuller, Bobby McMullen, and Terry Purtell will officiate the service. The burial will take place at Pinecrest Cemetery following the service.
Ethel Wheelis will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing her. Her memory will live on as a testament to a life filled with love, devotion, and faith. May she rest in eternal peace.
