Bessie was an accomplished horseman and along with her horse John, competed in many Equestrian Show Jumping events in Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana and Oklahoma. Later in life she took up rock climbing and bouldering.
A series of chronic illnesses caused her to retire early and give up her riding and climbing hobbies.
