Frances Fleming Red - April 4, 1933 – October 8, 2026
Frances Fleming Red was born on April 4, 1933, to Frederick and Viola Fleming. Following a stroke, she died on October 8, 2026, on her own terms.
Frances graduated from Little Rock High School in 1951. She was a proud Tiger and remained an active member of the 1951 Class Reunion Committee throughout the years. The committee did more than plan reunions, they organized regular outings to reminisce about their high school days and enjoy one another’s company. These friendships remained a treasured part of her life.
In November 1951, Frances married the love of her life, Joe Red. Together, they built a life that touched the lives of many. Their marriage was an example of true love and commitment and demonstrated how a love shared between two people can extend outward to enrich the lives of others.
While her first two daughters were young, Frances joined her mother at Southwestern Bell, where she worked first as a telephone operator and later as a clerk. She loved her job and her coworkers and delighted in sharing stories about her days as a switchboard operator, including the interesting phone calls she occasionally overheard.
It was at Southwestern Bell that Frances met two of her very best friends, Barbara Rowe and Pat Gire. They became more than friends; they were sisters in every way that mattered. Frances was “Pooh,” while Barbara and Pat were “Piglet” and “Tigger.” She treasured their friendship and loved their children as her own. The bond they shared was a rare and beautiful one that endured through the years.
Frances was a faithful member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ and later Sardis United Methodist Church, where she devoted her time and talents to serving others. She especially loved young people and taught Sunday School at both churches. The relationships she built with the children she taught continued long after they left her classroom. Even as those children grew into adults, she maintained a special bond with them and spoke of them often throughout the years.
Frances loved being around people and was involved in several charitable organizations, but her greatest love was always her family.
Because her twin brother died in infancy, Frances grew up as an only child and especially treasured her cousins. On her father’s side, she had many “Fleming cousins” whom she dearly loved. She looked forward to the epic family reunions and cherished every opportunity to spend time with them. Her cousins on her mother’s side were equally dear to her, and she shared a particularly close bond with Martha, Weldon, and Kenneth.
When it came to family, her husband, daughters, son-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were everything to her. There was nothing any of us could do that would keep her from loving us. She might not always like what we did, but she loved us exactly as we were and for who we were. Her love was unconditional.
It is difficult to put into words exactly who my mom was. She was strong, yet tenderhearted. She could be serious when the situation called for it, but she enjoyed a good laugh more than almost anything. She liked to be in control, yet she also learned to accept the things she could not change. She was born in a different era but was always ahead of her time.
Frances was a woman who loved deeply, laughed often, formed lifelong friendships, invested in the lives of others, and made room in her heart for people from all walks of life. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched and in the family and friends who will forever carry her love with them.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Joseph Red, Jr.; her infant twin brother, Frederick R. Fleming, Jr.; her daughter, Cinda Baldwin; and her granddaughter, Melanie Reeves.
She is survived by her daughters, Lana Weidower and Melissa Norris; her son-in-law, John Norris; her grandchildren, Mo Starr, Cody Baldwin (Junko), Collin Norris (Houston), and Alex Norris; and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her grandson, Kiffin Rogers, who served as her devoted, protective, and loving caregiver for several years.
Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Bryan Diffie on October 17 at 12 noon. Visitation will be held on October 16 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Both at Smith Little Rock Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be members of the children’s Sunday School class Frances led at Sardis United Methodist Church: John Green, III; Jared Guinn; Jessica Green Martin; Kirby Caddy Reynolds; Daniel Byrd and Tiffany Mosley Tidwell.
