Frank B. Sewall

Frank Bates Sewall, son of Dr. Lee Goodrich Sewall and Eleanor Andrews Sewall, was born in Battle Creek, Michigan on December 10, 1944. He died in Little Rock, Arkansas on October 5, 2024 at the age of 79.

Growing up Frank lived in Michigan, Maryland and Arkansas, as his father worked as Director of a Veterans Administration hospital in those states. After graduating from high school in Maryland, Frank attended Dartmouth College and graduated in 1967 with a B. A. in Political Science. In 1968, received an M.B.A. from Dartmouth. Subsequently, Frank served in the U.S. Navy as an Ensign for four years as a Supply Officer on a Cruiser. His geographical area of service was primarily off the East Coast and along the coast of the Carolinas and Florida. After completing his tour of duty, Frank entered Emory Law School from which he received a J.D. in 1972.

While he was in college and graduate school, his family moved to Arkansas where his father was director of the NLR VA hospital until his father’s death in 1971. Frank followed his family to Arkansas after Law School. (Arkansas had been his mother’s family home.) Once in Arkansas, Frank worked at the Arkansas State Insurance Department for a time. During that time, he met his wife, Angela Maynard. They were married in 1976.

Frank continued his work in Insurance law during a multi-year tenure at National Old Line Insurance Company and later at Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield where he was Chief Legal Counsel until his retirement in 2022.

Frank was active in the community as a member of Rotary Club 99, head of the Arkansas Bar Foundation, and as a Finance Committee member at the Cathedral of St. Andrew in Little Rock. He was a member of the St. Thomas Moore Society, which honored him for his work.

Frank and Angela enjoyed travel, the arts and friendships not only in Little Rock and Arkansas but also around the country. Frank’s father and mother predeceased him. Frank is survived by his wife of 48 years, Dr. Angela Maynard Sewall, his brother Dr. Murphy G. Sewall of Connecticut, Murphy’s spouse, Frank’s nieces Alice Sewall of New York, and Kathy Batlle and her spouse Dr. Juan Batlle of Boulder, Colorado and their three children. Other survivors include Angela’s brothers Charles D. Maynard, Jr, Dr. Thomas C. Maynard, M.D. (his family) and Frank’s cousin Eleanor Deierlein (husband, Walter).
