Today, we mourn the loss of the funniest, most charismatic person many of us have ever known. Gary Timothy Martin was born in Arlington, Virginia, on November 6th , 1966, to James Andrew Martin Sr., and Bernadine Frances Martin (née Keyho). He lived his life without doing anything in moderation, including the way he loved his family. Husband to Pamela Kaye Martin (née Shaddock); father to Kyle [Shelbie] Martin and Emily [Austin] McEuen (née Martin); grandfather to October McEuen; brother to James “Jimbo” [Sandra] Martin, Mary Martin, and Geanine Martin; and friend to countless others; his memory will be cherished for generations to come. He is preceded in death by both his father and his beloved brother, and he is survived by his mother, wife, children, granddaughter, and sisters.
Gary represents so many things to so many people. For many of us, he’s the first call we make when something goes wrong with the car. His seemingly infinite knowledge of mechanics has always provided a safety net for his friends and family. For some, he’s the home-grown chef feeding wedding guests slow-smoked brisket or bringing prosperity to the nursing staff with greens and black-eyed peas on New Year’s Eve. His cooking has been the cornerstone of togetherness for evenings innumerable. And for just about everyone, he’s the captivating, quick- witted comedian whose jokes are always rife with his irresistible candor. His stories fill every room to the brim with the richest entertainment and the deepest belly laughs. The joy (or, at the very least, excitement) he has brought into the lives of everyone around him is immeasurable and will never be forgotten.
It feels impossible to put “Gary Martin” into words. He’s Dad. He’s Big G. He’s Junebug, Mr. Martin, Bop Bop, Spook. He’s the “gary-isms” passed down and the tales of endless practical jokes. He’s a rumbling engine, the smell of grease-stained hands, and the inescapable taste of liquid smoke. We are heartbroken to be here today but we are so grateful for the enormous legacy he leaves for all those who were lucky enough to be loved by him.
A visitation will be held on Friday, November 21st , from 5:00-7:00 P.M. at Smith Benton Funeral Home in Benton, Arkansas. A cheerful celebration of life will be held at a later date, TBA.
