George Varner, age 85, of Amity, died Monday, August 13, 2012. He was born on April 13, 1927, at Marvell, the son of Martin Varner and Mattie Elmer Snider. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Olean Guin Varner; one son, Robbie Dean Varner; and two daughters, Melissa Kay Long and Patricia Olean Rodgers. A veteran of World War II, he served in Germany and was a member of the Culvert Springs Assembly of God Church. He loved to work and haul logs. He is survived by his wife, Margie Varner of Hughes; two sons, George David Varner and Joseph Varner, and his wife, Dorlisa, all of Amity; two daughters, Beverly Carol Killian, and her husband, Jim, and Sherry Elaine Garner, and her husband, Donald, all of Amity; three stepsons, Donnie Mooney, James Mooney and J. L. Mooney, all of Hughes; two stepdaughters, Penny Morris and Sheila Mooney, both of Hughes; sixteen grandchildren, David Rodgers, Cheryl Jordan, Sarah Martin, Melissa Varner, John B. Varner, Misty Waitkus, Angela Pittman, Jessica Little, Joshua Killian, David Garner, Ella Carpenter, Kim Arnold, Marty Varner, Robbie Redleaf, Patrick Redleaf and Jonathan Long; one brother, John Varner of Amity; and two sisters, Viola Garrett of Amity and Marie Hollingsworth of Monahan, Texas. Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, August 16, 2012, in the Davis-Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Glenwood with Rev. David Walker and Rev. Jerry Fagan officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening, 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Interment will be in the Coker Cemetery under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood. Pallbearers will be Joshua Killian, Marty Varner, Patrick Redleaf, John Varner, Robbie Redleaf and David Garner. Guest registry is at www.davis-smith.com.
