Gerald Don "Sonny" Bowers

Gerald Don "Sonny" Bowers, 88, peacefully passed away September 17, 2024. He was born on June 2, 1936, in Bauxite, Arkansas and leaves behind a legacy of love, devotion, and cherished memories. Sonny was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Benton.

Sonny earned his bachelor's degree from Henderson Teacher’s College. During that time, he met the love of his life, Betsy Murchison. She was attending school just across the street at OBU. They married and had two boys, Don and Jeff. After proudly serving his country in the Army, Sonny began a rewarding career as a pharmaceutical representative in the medical industry. After his retirement, Sonny and Betsy enjoyed traveling around the country and were still very much in love. He continued to stay active by driving cars for Landers, showcasing his strong work ethic and commitment to staying engaged. His dedication to his profession mirrored the same devotion he held for his family and faith.

Sonny was renowned for his warm and loving personality. Family and friends knew him as Papa, a nickname that embodied his nurturing spirit and the immense affection he had for those around him. He reveled in quality time spent with his loved ones, fostering unforgettable memories that will be treasured for years to come. He delighted in hosting tea parties with his granddaughter and going on fishing trips with his sons and grandsons, activities that brought immense joy and strengthened family bonds. Rain or shine, he made it a point to attend all the sporting events of his children and grandchildren, always cheering them on with enthusiasm. He had a passion for fishing and was even known to do a little quail hunting, further reflecting his love for the great outdoors.

Sonny is survived by his son, Don Bowers; special daughter-in-law, Judy Bowers; grandchildren, Josh Bowers, Rebekah Bowers, and Jeffery Bowers; great-grandson, Jaxon Miller; and many family members and friends who will all miss him dearly.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Betsy; his son, Jeff Bowers; parents, Neal and Lucille Bowers; as well as two sisters, Joan Clark and Dorcas Holicer, who we are sure were awaiting him with open arms.

A graveside service to honor his life will be held on September 30, 2024, at Rosemont Cemetery in Benton, Arkansas, starting at 10:00 AM. As friends and family gather to celebrate his remarkable life, they will remember him not just for his achievements, but for the kindness, warmth, and genuine love he shared with all.

Sonny's legacy will continue through the lives he touched and the love he imparted to his family, a lasting reminder of what it means to live fully and love deeply.
