Harold D. May, 80, of Little Rock passed away in Little Rock, Wednesday, September 17, 2008. He graduated from Joe T. Robinson High School and was a National AAU Champion swimmer in the 50 meter free style and the 100 meter breast stroke. He joined the Navy after graduating from high school. He achieved the title of seaman 2nd class before receiving his honorable discharge on February 7, 1947. After his naval service he went to U.C.A. and achieved a bachelor degree in education. He later became a football coach at North Little Rock High School. He worked with the Boys Clubs of America and opened new clubs in Texas and Oklahoma. He went on to work for the U.S. Forest Service where he retired after 30 years of service. He was also a boxing coach, where he coached two national Golden Glove Champions and one Pan American Champion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Melba June ?Chappell? May, of Little Rock; son, David T. May of Magnolia, TX; daughters, Della May-Taglia of Woodlands, TX and Pamelea May of Knoxville, TN; 6 grandchildren, Amber N. Paysinger, Whitney A. Holte, Brittany May, Savannah May, Joshua Seth Taglia, Devon Kade Westwood; and 4 great grandchildren, Blake, Tommy, Katelyn, and Mackenzie.
Funeral services will be held 11:30 A.M. Monday at North Little Rock Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery.
