Harold Herbert Pless, a beloved figure known for his open, friendly, and warm nature, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2026, in Little Rock, Arkansas, at the remarkable age of 103. Born on February 28, 1923, in Lonoke, Arkansas, he was the fourth child and second son among eleven siblings, entering a large family that shaped much of his early character and sense of responsibility.

Harold’s journey began in the rural fields of Lonoke, where he grew up farming alongside his family and indulged in the spirited adventures reminiscent of Tom Sawyer. At just sixteen years old, life changed dramatically when his father, Van Herbert Pless, tragically passed away. As the oldest son remaining at home, Harold's role expanded significantly, becoming a pillar of strength and guidance for his younger brothers and sisters. This profound responsibility cultivated the resilience and steadfastness that he carried throughout his life.

He completed his education by graduating from Lonoke High School in 1942. Soon after, Harold honorably served his country in the United States Army during two periods: from November 22, 1948, to December 2, 1949, and again from September 3, 1950, to May 21, 1952. His dedication and commitment during these years were a testament to his strong sense of duty and patriotism.

Professionally, Harold was a man of great versatility and determination. He worked in various areas of sales until his retirement at the age of 62. Yet retirement was not the end of his working years; at 75, driven by an undiminished zest for life and new challenges, he obtained his real estate license and returned to the workforce. Beyond his career, Harold was gifted with hands that crafted beauty and joy. His hobbies included building kitchen cabinets, making dollhouses, playhouses, rocking horses, and contributing labor to build wheelchair ramps through his church—endeavors that brought delight to many and mirrored his generous and caring spirit.

A devoted member of Pulaski Heights Baptist Church and later Calvary Baptist Church, Harold faithfully served as a deacon, embodying his deep faith and commitment to his community throughout his long life. His life was a living example of service, kindness, and humility.

Harold is survived by his cherished daughters, Alice Smith and Maribeth Pless; his siblings, Mildred Pless Jones, Robert "Bob" Pless Sr., Eugene Pless, and Carolyn Pless Fisher, all of whom carry forward his legacy with pride, love, and cherished memories. He was also a proud grandfather to Troy L. Smith (Melissa), Danielle Courtney (Craig), and Abigail Ramirez (Edgar), and a great-grandfather of eight: William Smith, Timothy Shafer (Sarah), Klarissa Myers (Seth), Trevor Courtney, Emmy Courtney, Scarlet Ramirez, Christian Ramirez, and Aria Ramirez. Additionally, his family has grown to include four great-great-grandchildren: Samson Myers, Shiloh Myers, Lillie Shafer, and George Shafer, who continue to be reminded of his enduring impact.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Gussie Jones Pless, his parents Van Herbert and Etta Elizabeth Pless, his brothers William Earl Pless, Thomas Edward Pless, Gaines Eulys “Bud” Pless, Hershal Leon Pless, and his sisters Hazel Pless Conway, Anna Lou Pless Burgess, and Mandine Pless Holmes. Though these dear souls have passed on, their memories and influence remained close to Harold’s heart until the end.

Family, friends, and all who knew Harold will gather to honor his rich and full life on June 24, 2026, beginning with a visitation at Smith Family Funeral Home Little Rock, 8801 Knoedl Ct., Little Rock, Arkansas, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed immediately by the funeral service at 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM. The burial will take place at Wattensaw Cemetery, 7546 Hwy 31, Lonoke, Arkansas, at 1:00 PM. These moments will reflect on a life well-lived—marked by dedication, love, and countless contributions both large and small.

Harold Herbert Pless lived a century enriched with hard work, faith, family, and a warmth that touched many. He leaves behind a tapestry of memories, woven through the hearts of those who loved him, ensuring his spirit will forever be treasured. His life reminds us all of the quiet power of responsibility, the beauty of kindness, and the grace of enduring love. May he rest in gentle peace.
