Helen Jean Miles Smith age 88 of Arkadelphia, went to be with the Lord February 4, 2018. Helen was born July 8, 1929, in Zook Spur, IA, the daughter of Elmer and Lucy Hartley Miles. She was the youngest and last surviving sibling of thirteen. Helen has been a faithful member of First United Methodist Church since 1964. She was a member of the Upper Room Sunday School Class, United Methodist Women and Ruth Circle. Helen loved to go to worship and church activities.
Helen moved to Rock Island, IL, where she met her future husband, Dr. Charles E. Smith, at Memorial Christian Church. They were married at the same church on September 1, 1950. Throughout their married life they lived in Illinois, Tennessee, Louisiana, and finally settling in Arkansas in 1963.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, twelve siblings, and her beloved husband. Her proudest and greatest accomplishment was raising her family alongside her husband. Surviving Helen are her seven children and spouses, Cindy Hammonds of Arkadelphia, Ronnie Smith of Jonesboro, Donnie Smith (Caren), of Sage, Jeanie Green of Arkadelphia, Steve Smith (Gail), of Humboldt, TN, Mickey Smith of St. Louis MO., and Michelle Smith of Arkadelphia. She is also survived by grandchildren who lovingly called her Grandma, Meemaw, Mimi or Nanny, Alissa Garrett (Rob) of Arkadelphia, Derek Hammonds of Hot Springs, Brett Smith of Kingsport, TN, Blake Smith (April), of Melbourne, Cara Quintero (Sean) of Sherwood, Aaron Warren (Rebekah) of Baumholder, Germany, Cody Smith (Ashley) of Bismarck, Doug Smith, of San Diego, CA, Carlin Smith of Starkville, MS. She loved and adored her great-grandchildren, Kennady and Kalyn Garrett, December Taylor, Hayden Brown, Tempe, Wesson, Wyatt, Zane and Zettie Smith, Thomas, Levi and Clara Warren, Caroline Grimes, Taylor Dimer, Sadie and Malik Sanders and Henley Smith.
The family would like to thank the dear friends who took Mom to chemo and doctors appointments, Nellene Roberts, Becky Andrews, Sue Waymack, Smokey and Claudette Smith, Grace Thompson, and Carolyn Bell. We would also like to thank Mom's caregivers, Linda Ford and Beth Patrick.
The outpouring of love, encouragement, and prayers this past year have meant so much to us, and we thank all of you.
The visitation will be at Ruggles Wilcox Funeral Home on Tuesday February 6, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday February 7, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church in Arkadelphia with Rev.
