Helen Vaughn West, born on November 6, 1930, in West Point, Arkansas, peacefully passed away at her residence on June 29, 2025. Helen was a remarkable woman whose life was defined by her devoted service to family, her passion for children, and her unwavering spirit.
An accomplished accountant, Helen showcased her brilliant mind in her professional career. However, her greatest joy came from her deep affection for children, which led her to open a day care in her home. There, she became known affectionately as "Momma West," cherished by many who were fortunate enough to be under her care.
Helen shared a close bond with her daughter, creating treasured memories during their "3:30 Morning Girl Talks." These moments of connection and love are fondly remembered, and her daughter holds them dearly in her heart.
Though she had a playful disposition, Helen often referred to herself with a twinkle in her eye, responding to inquiries about her well-being with the quip, "I'm onery, just ask Nancy!" This light-hearted personality endeared her to all who knew her.
Outside of her family life, Helen dedicated her time to various volunteer endeavors. She served as a Girl Scout leader, a Red Cross swim instructor, and a Sunday School teacher, embodying the values of her Baptist faith. Her service to others was a testament to her character and the love she spread throughout her community.
Helen is survived by her beloved daughters, B.J. Sorrels and her husband Ken, and Nancy Lavender and her husband Michael. She leaves behind five grandchildren: Andy Burke, Brian Burke and wife Jenny, Christi Burke, Matthew Graber and wife Kaylynn, and Katie Graber; and six great-grandchildren: Madison Burke, Abbie Burke, Zachary Burke, Natalie Burke, Charlie Graber, and Elvie Graber who carry her legacy forward. Her siblings, Boss Vaughn and his wife Norma, and Joyce Bates and her husband Don; and son-in-law, Alden Graber also survive her. Helen was deeply loved by many family members and friends, all of whom will miss her profoundly.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Olen Ray West, as well as two children, Jean Burke and Sandra Graber, her grandson, Jonathan Lavender; and granddaughter-in-law, Tammie Rather. Helen Vaughn West will be remembered for her kindness, her laughter, and the indelible mark she left on the lives of those privileged to know her.
A graveside service will be held at a later date.
