Herman Harlan

Herman "Bud" Harlan, 80 of Jessieville, passed away January 11, 2013 in Little Rock, AR.

Clyde Hazel and Maggie Delena Harlan legally married and had four children; three daughters and one son, Herman "Bud" Harlan. Second born on April 14th, 1932 in Hickory Plains, Prairie County, AR.

Bud's dad was a share-cropper doing farm work and moving from farm to farm during the depression years to feed the family.

During WWII the family moved to California for a couple of years. Clyde worked in the ship yards as a marine electrician working shift work, drinking alcohol, ill health came on early in life.

Bud quit school after moving back to Arkansas after finishing the eighth grade to go to work to buy food to help support his family.

At age fourteen, he worked in the Log Woods saw mill in Hickory Plains until he joined the U.S. Marines at age seventeen with his parents signing consent papers. Bud graduated from Marine boot camp on April 1, 1950 and was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California. Two months later on June 25th the Korean War started and the first Marine brigade mounted out and boarded ships heading to Korea on July 1.

Bud spent twenty years in the Marines and spent time in Korea and two tours in Vietnam.

From 1950 to 1970 Bud served in many countries all over the globe and had two tours with the U.S. Navy. The first tour was flying as a navigator on operation deep freeze at the South Pole and spent six months in Antarctica. The second tour was aboard a guided missile cruiser and commanding the Marine security detachment as commander officer.

During Bud's twenty years in the military he worked his way through the enlisted rank reaching master Sgt. E-8 then was commissioned as an officer earning the title of "Mustang." Bud rose to the grade of Captain before retiring in 1970. After retirement he became a fishing guide on Lake Ouachita. After chasing striped bass for 38 years as a charter boat captain he retired again.

Bud has one daughter, Lacey Harlan-Ralls, by a former marriage. Lacey (Todd)currently reside in Mexico, Missouri and have one daughter, Lauren.
In 1976 Bud married the love of his life, Eunice Grace who had three sons; Jason, Lance and Len.

Bud was a Christian man who loved the Lord and was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. At the age of ten Bud asked Jesus into his life and was saved that summer. He was baptized in a cow pond. Bud was a member of the Masonic Lodge. A 32 degree Master Mason for over 50 years. Bud also was a past patron in the Eastern Star.

Funeral services for Bud will be Wednesday, January 16 at 10:00AM at Rock Springs Baptist church in Jessieville, AR. Visitation will be from 9:00AM until the time of service at 10:00 a.m. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m at Pinecrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Alexander.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Bud's memory to Arkansas Regional Organ Recovery Agency at 1701 Aldersgate Road Little Rock, AR 72205.
