Horace William Garton known to those who loved him as "Chic" or "Pastor G", age 87 went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 4, 2012 at the Saline Memorial Hospice House in Bryant. He was born in Philadelphia, PA on June 8, 1924.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jean Staker Garton of Benton, 2 daughters; Dale Garton Hetzel of Alexander and Dru Garton Filiberto of Palm Bay, Florida, one son; Donn Garton of Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam, his sister; Dorothy Garton Obst of Medford Lake, NJ, six grandchildren; Joshua Hetzel of Benton, Jonathan Hetzel and wife, Carmen of Benton, Jeremy Hetzel and wife, Susan of Colorado Springs, Caitlin Hetzel of Colorado Springs, Carissa and Claire Hetzel both of Alexander, AR, six great-grandchildren Johanna, Aaron, Elianna, Skylar, Savannah and Riley Hetzel, as well as many other friends and family members who loved him and will miss him greatly.
He is preceded in death by his son; Dean Garton and parents; Horace and Florence Garton (Illenberger).
Chic enjoyed sports and had played them all, his favorite hobby was golf. He was a graduate of Temple University where he received a Bachelors in Science and Concordia Theological Seminary in Springfield, Illinois with a Masters of Divinity. Chic lived life with joy and enthusiasm working as a Junior High Physical Ed Teacher and Coach in New Jersey, a traveling sales representative in New England, served as a business executive in Texas and a Lutheran Pastor in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Zion Lutheran in Avilla, Arkansas. He served his country with pride in WWII as a paratrooper in the Pacific receiving numerous medals including the Bronze Star, it was there that he received his nickname, "Chic" because he was the youngest "jumper" in his unit.
Arrangements are under the direction of Peaceful Haven Funeral Home in Benton, AR. A Celebration of Victory in Jesus for the life of Horace Garton will be held at 6:30 P.M.
