Howard Stephens

Dr. Howard G. (Beans) Stephens, 89, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 12, 2017, with family and friends by his side. His struggle with cancer and Parkinsons is over and he is now free.

Howard was born in Lynn Haven, Florida in 1927. He served during WWII in the US Navy in 1945 and was training on Guam for an invasion of Japan when the war ended. He always believed if the US had been forced to invade Japan he and many other Americans would have died.

Howard's education included a B.S. degree at Florida State, where he participated in gymnastics and played on the Seminoles first football team, M.A. at Memphis State, (where he told of seeing Elvis at a florist shop one day), and an Ed.D. at the University of Georgia. He moved to Little Rock in 1969 to teach at UALR where he served as Dean of Education and Continuing Education before returning to what he loved, teaching, and he retired in 1996 as Professor Emeritus.

Howard had many interests including reading, bible study, teaching, gardening, beekeeping, flying, boating, sports and his FSU Seminoles. He was so tender and caring with all his pets and animals in general and served as president of the Humane Society for several years. He and Sue Ann operated Executive Realty for many years. He is a member of the Calvary Church of the Nazarene. He loved being at the church with his church family. Howard listened and learned all through his life and he always had the answer for our questions.

Howard is survived by his wife of almost 46 years, Sue Ann Stephens; son, Howard Jeffrey Stephens, of Cabot; daughter, Pamela Dale Tschiemer (Mike) of Little Rock; his cherished grandson, Daniel Jeffrey Tschiemer, and a stepson, Dr. Dan Beavers of Siloam Springs, Ark.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 29 at 1:00 p.m. at Little Rock Funeral Home, 8801 Knoedl Ct. (NW corner I-630 and Barrow Rd.). Donations in Howard's memory may be made to the Pulaski County Humane Society or to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements by Little Rock Funeral Home, (501)224-2200. Howard's online guestbook may be signed at www.littlerockfuneralhome.com.
