James Edward Calender

James E. Calender, 85, of Benton, Arkansas, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2026.

Born on September 24, 1940, in Swifton, Arkansas, James was the son of the late William A. Calender and Hattie Mae (Hodge) Calender. He lived a life defined by hard work, service to his country, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life.

James proudly served in the United States Army, where he earned recognition as a Sharpshooter and Missile Marksman. Following his military service, he built a career as a welder, a trade that reflected his strong work ethic and skilled hands.

A man of the Full Gospel faith, James found joy in spending time with those he loved most. Whether he was casting a fishing line, hunting in the great outdoors, or simply enjoying the company of family, he treasured every opportunity to make memories with the people who meant the most to him.

James also had a fun-loving spirit and looked forward to Saturday nights at Sugarloaf Dancing Center, where he enjoyed dancing and the friendships he made there. His warm smile, easygoing nature, and love for life will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

James was preceded in death by his parents, William A. and Hattie Mae (Hodge) Calender; his sister, Anna Summers; and his beloved great-granddaughter, Brylee Crews.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory six children: Cookie Womble of Benton, Arkansas, Hubie Tharp (Shila) of Batesburg, South Carolina, Mary Alice of Romance, Arkansas, Renee Edmonson (Harold) of Benton, Arkansas, Rechelle Mills (Stacey) of Batesville, Arkansas, and Tommy Calender (Pam) of Colt, Arkansas; several grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

A graveside service celebrating James's life will be held at Remmel Cemetery in Newport, Arkansas, on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.

James leaves behind a legacy of faith, hard work, and a love for family, the outdoors, and the simple pleasures of life. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
