James "Marty" Garrick, a beloved member of the Little Rock community, passed away on January 16, 2026, at the age of 77. Born on July 4, 1948, in Little Rock, Arkansas, Marty spent his life cultivating a warm and welcoming presence that touched the hearts of all who knew him.
Marty dedicated much of his career as a manufacturers representative for flooring companies across Arkansas and Texas. His professional life mirrored his personal ethos – friendly, approachable, and always ready to lend a hand. Marty was a man of remarkable kindness and a pleasing personality that made him a friend to everyone he encountered.
An avid sports enthusiast, Marty had a deep love for baseball and football. His favorite memories were often filled with laughter and joy, as he shared the thrill of these games with friends and family. Music also played a vital role in his life; he sang in a band, one of the happiest periods of his life. Marty cherished holiday gatherings with his family in Austin, creating lasting memories that will be fondly remembered by all.
Marty's educational journey led him to the Arkansas State Teachers College in Conway, Arkansas, but he ultimately adopted the spirit of The University of Texas Longhorns, showcasing his dedication and loyalty to his team.
In a joyful chapter of his life, Marty married the love of his life, Glenda Sahm, in December of 1980. Their bond was a source of strength and comfort until her unfortunate passing in 2017. Marty cared for her deeply throughout their time together, demonstrating the true meaning of love and partnership.
Marty is preceded in death by his wife Glenda, his parents James Martin Garrick Sr. and Marie Bradshaw Garrick, and his stepson Joseph Ernest Sahm.
Marty is survived by his brother, Ron Garrick (Bonnie) of Austin, TX; niece Renee (Mike) Leifeste and grand-niece Vivian, grand-nephew Luke, and grand-niece Savannah, all from Austin, TX; nephew Robert (Geral) Garrick of Austin, TX; and grand-nieces Jeilyn and Arielle. He is also survived by Joseph Sahm's children, Jesse, Justin, and Kaitlin. His family will miss his infectious smile and the warmth he brought into their lives.
Marty's family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to his life-long friend, Ralph Burley of Little Rock, for his unwavering support, as well as to the staff at Springs at Chenal, especially LaKisha Neal, whose kindness and care provided Marty with comfort in his final days. The family also thanks the compassionate staff at Hospice Home Care of Little Rock for their invaluable assistance.
A memorial service to honor Marty will be held on February 6, 2026, at Smith Family Funeral Home in Little Rock, Arkansas, starting at 10:00 AM, with a visitation to follow at 11:00 AM.
In remembering Marty, we celebrate a life rich in love, kindness, and cherished memories. He leaves behind a legacy of friendship, laughter, and joy that will resonate within the hearts of all who knew him. We all wish we could possess the happiness and positive outlook that Marty shared with us, he will be dearly missed.
