Listen to Obituary

James “Jim” Clayton Johnston, Jr., 74, of Benton, Arkansas, passed away October 15, 2026. He was born on April 25, 1952, in San Antonio, Texas, to the late James Clayton “Boppy” Johnston and Alma Ruth (Bloesch) “Mimi” Johnston.

Jim was a proud graduate of the University of Arkansas, where he earned both his undergraduate and master’s degrees and was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He dedicated more than 30 years of his life to serving and protecting the people of Arkansas as a member of the Arkansas State Police, retiring with the rank of lieutenant. He also served as an officer with the Fayetteville Police Department. Throughout his distinguished career in law enforcement, Jim earned the respect of those who served alongside him and took great pride in a profession built on service, integrity, and dedication.

When he wasn't serving his community, Jim could often be found enjoying the great outdoors. Whether hunting, fishing, waterskiing, or boating, he loved the freedom and adventure that came with being outside. Jim enjoyed spending time in his shop, where he put his skills to work creating special pieces for his family. He was also an avid car enthusiast who enjoyed collecting, buying, and selling cars, and he loved the thrill of riding his motorcycle. Music was another great passion of Jim's, and his appreciation for all genres meant there was always something worth listening to.

Jim had an easygoing personality, a wonderfully dry sense of humor, and a hearty laugh that was impossible to forget. He had a way of finding humor in just about anything, and those who knew him best could always count on a clever remark or a perfectly timed joke. And while Jim enjoyed many things in life, one of his sweetest pleasures was a generous slice of German chocolate cake—the perfect ending to any meal!

Above all else, Jim was a family man. His family meant the world to him, and nothing brought him greater happiness than spending time with those he loved, especially his grandchildren. He had a thoughtful way of making everyone feel remembered and special, never missing an opportunity to send a birthday card with a check tucked inside. It was one of his many little traditions that spoke volumes about his generous heart.

Jim shared an incredibly special bond with his sister, Jan, whom he loved dearly. Their relationship was one of the treasured blessings of his life. He also shared 32 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Sue. More than husband and wife, they were best friends and partners in life. With both having careers in law enforcement, they shared a unique understanding and respect for one another. Jim was not only Sue's loving husband but also her mentor, confidant, and greatest friend. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James Clayton “Boppy” Johnston and Alma Ruth (Bloesch) “Mimi” Johnston; and his beloved sister, Jan Davis.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 32 years, Sue Johnston; children, Jill Hardaway and husband Nathan, Kirsten Caldwell and husband Jordan Trotter, and Clayton Johnston; grandchildren, Austin Hardaway, Ethan Hardaway, and Isabella Hardaway; nieces, Wendy Anderson, Andrea Gluckman and husband Steve, and their children, Cato and Hannah; brother-in-law, John Davis; Jill’s mother Sandra Johnston, and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, family members, and friends who loved Jim and will miss him dearly.

Jim will be remembered for his years of dedicated service, his many talents, his quick wit, and that unforgettable laugh. But his greatest legacy will always be the love he gave so freely to his family and the countless memories they will carry in their hearts. A man who could appreciate a beautiful car, a good song, a day on the water, and a slice of German chocolate cake. Jim knew how to enjoy life's simple pleasures. Most importantly, he knew that the greatest treasures in life were the people he loved.
