James Edward Karber age 79, of Alpine died on February 12, 2006 at his home.
He was born February 27, 1926 in Stanley Camp the son of John Morgan Karber and Myrtle Icie Pierce Karber. He served in the U.S. Army before settling in Indiana and worked as a contract mail truck driver. He returned to Alpine in 1968 and began working for the Clark County Road Department. He retired in `1991 from the county and has been a regular at the Alpine Store almost every day since retiring. He is better known by his friends and CB buddies as Screwdriver which was not only his nickname, but also his CB handle. He belonged to the Alpine Presbyterian Church and the Point Cedar CB Club. He enjoyed riding the bus on Thursdays to the Senior Citizens Center in Arkadelphia and attending the activities and festivities at the Alpine Community Center. He was an avid gardener.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Myrtle Karber, two brothers, John Karber Jr. and Mark Karber, and three sisters, Gearl Dean Karber, Dorothy Helen Karber and Maxine Beaty.
He is survived by his two brothers, Billy Karber and Jerry Karber both of Alpine, 10 nieces and nephews, numerous great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 14, 2006 at Ruggles-Wilcox Chapel in Arkadelphia with Rev. Johnny McAnally and Rev. Billy Thomason officiating. Interment will be in Jones Cemetery in Amity. Visitation will be 6-8 PM Monday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be nephews and friends. Honorary pallbearers are the Point Cedar CB Club members.
