James Clifford Nichols of Little Rock, formerly of North Little Rock, died August 7, 2012 at Baptist Hospice at the age of 93. He was born November 10, 1918 to a farming family near England, Arkansas. He and his late wife, Eldene Bell Nichols, were married on August 31, 1939. She preceded him in death on May 16 of this year.
Also preceding him in death were his parents, Frank and Dessie Nichols, his brother Ernest, who died at Normandy on D-Day, July 8, 1944, and brothers, Roy, Alvin, Lemuel, and sister Viola Sutton. All five brothers served in the military in World War II. Mr. Nichols joined the Navy, and was assigned to the Marines as a corpsman in the Pacific campaign. It was his duty and honor to attend to the wounded American soldiers being flown to Pearl Harbor for their medical treatment.
He and his late business partner, Bob Duncan, were the Pharmacists-owners of Sylvan Hills Pharmacy in Sherwood, Arkansas, now Mark's Pharmacy.
Mr. Nichols was a member of Fairview Park Church of Christ, but in later years was homebound and unable to attend services.
He is survived by his son Jim (Sara) of Hendersonville, Tennessee, and daughter Brenda Forthman (Henry) of Little Rock. His grandchildren are Lauren Batson (Todd), and Mark Nichols of Hendersonville, Tennessee, and Phillip and Tim Forthman, of Little Rock. His great-grandchildren are Jack and Sara Catherine Batson, and Michael Forthman of Riverside, California.
Interment will be at Rest Hills Memorial Park in North Little Rock on Saturday, August 11, following a private memorial service, with military honors, for the immediate family at North Little Rock Funeral Home. Brother Dennis Carrow will conduct the service.
Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Research Foundation in lieu of floral arrangements. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr. Kim and Dr. Smith at Baptist, and to the seventh floor nursing staff.
