Jimmy Newman

Jimmy Harold Newman, born July 21, 1950, called Pop Pop by his four granddaughters, went to his place in heaven on January 25, 2021.  He grew up around Silver City and Indianola, Mississippi. He was raised in a family of seven sisters, and was a man of a soft voice. He was an outstanding football player in high school.  After finishing school, he worked odd jobs and was drafted in the U.S. Army and served a tour of duty in Germany during the Vietnam War, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Upon returning from overseas, he lived in Indianola where he met the “Love of his Life,” Donna Jean Criswell, whom he married on February 3, 1973. Donna worked in banking and Jimmy was a Lieutenant in the Indianola Police Department. In August 1988, they relocated to North Little Rock where Jimmy established a maintenance contracting business. He was an active member of Liberty Fellowship Church and a member of American Legion Post 1 in North Little Rock.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, Preston and Ora Newman, and five sisters, Lucy Childs, Flora Hunter, Eva Caston, Joyce Fulcher and Betty Newman. He is survived by his wife, Donna Jean Newman; sons, Stephen Newman and Michael Newman; uncle, Robert Criswell, who was like a father to him; sisters, Pat Chalk of Village, Florida and Thelma Brown of Hollandale, Mississippi; four granddaughters, Abigail Newman, Brooklyn Newman, Shayla Newman and Alyssa Warnock (Dustin); and other family and friends.

There will be a graveside service for Jimmy at the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery, officiated by Janet Troutman Ward.
