John Daugherty

October 22, 1939 — February 4, 2022

John Daugherty

John W. Daugherty, 82, of Benton, Arkansas passed away February 4, 2022.  He was born October 22, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan to the late John William Daugherty, II and Shirley Irene (Linenfelser) Daugherty Bombalski.

John proudly served in the United States Navy and Army for over twenty-one years.  His area of expertise was in radio, where he served as both a radio operator and mechanic.  John was a Vietnam veteran and earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (3 Campaigns), Meritorious Unit Citation (Second Award), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device; two Oversea Service Bars, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and the M-14 Rifle Expert Badge.  He traveled all over Europe, Germany, and Belgium in the military with his wife and son.   John was a member of the Amateur Radio Association for over fifty years.  He loved old western movies (and may have secretly wanted to be a cowboy!), military movies and military documentaries. One of John’s favorite things was taking his family on a vacation every year.  Some of their trips included traveling all over Europe, going to Disney, skydiving in Tennessee (at the age of 70!), Niagara Falls, Horseback riding at a Dude Ranch, and even rock climbing when he was in his 70s.  John loved playing and coaching soccer with his son, and the Police Athletic League, which he travelled with. John was an amazing family man who loved creating and making memories together.  He was very active and enjoyed fishing, water skiing, snow skiing, and was an avid golfer. John always had his son at his side whether he was at the rifle range or shooting bow and arrows and bowling in bowling leagues. John was known for being brutally honest, speaking whatever was on his mind and for teaching his grandkids about being funny together, like shooting straw wrappers.  He made life an adventure and definitely lived his life to its fullest.

John was preceded in death by his father, John William Daugherty II; and mother, Shirley Bombalski.

John is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Helen Daugherty; son John W. Daugherty IV and fiancé, Lindsay Gonzalez of Dallas, TX; grandchildren: Tyler Daugherty, A.J. Daugherty, John W. “J.J.” Daugherty, V, Emma Daugherty, and Johnathan Daugherty; great-grandchild, Elaina Rose Daugherty; brother, Donald M. Daugherty and wife, Barbara of Livonia Michigan; sister, Maryene Kay Domini and husband, Donald of Alexandria, Minnesota; close friend, Ed Abbott; as well as a host of other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
