John Wilson Mooney, 75, passed away on February 18, 2026. He was born on October 21, 1950, in Little Rock, Arkansas, and was raised in Benton, where he graduated from Benton High School in 1968.
John devoted his life to helping others. As a psychologist and social worker, he spent many years working at the State Hospital and at UAMS, where he cared deeply for the people he served. He had a steady presence and a listening ear that brought comfort to countless patients and families. Before his career began, John proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
Outside of work, John was full of life. He loved riding motorcycles and listening to music, and he rarely passed up a chance to spend time with friends. Friday nights were often reserved for laughter and friendly competition over darts, cards, or a game of pool. Those evenings—simple, joyful, and full of stories—meant the world to him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Woodrow and Thelma (Pierce) Mooney.
Above all, John was a family man. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Bobbie Mooney; his son, Michael Mooney and wife Pamela; his stepdaughter, Rachel Watts; and his grandchildren: Kaitlyn Honea, Tiffany McGrath and husband Mike, Presley Smith, Samantha Boley and husband Josh, and Shelby Hill and husband Tyler. He was a proud great-grandfather to Elijah and Brogen McGrath, Jameson McGrath, Sawyer and Amelia Boley, and Renley and Scotlyn Hill. He is also survived by his sisters, Polly Nelson and husband Travis, and Debbie Mitchell and husband Don, along with many extended family members and dear friends.
A time of gathering family and friends for visitation will be held on Thursday, February 26, from 5:00-7:00 PM, at Smith-Benton Funeral Home, 322 N. Market Street, Benton, Arkansas.
John’s life was one of service, loyalty, and love. He showed up for people—whether in his office, at home, or around a pool table—and he leaves behind memories that will be told and retold for years to come. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
