Johnie (John) Wray Cox, beloved brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on May 14, 2025, at the age of 85 in Russellville, Arkansas. Born to Oscar and Ruth Cox, John is the fifth of seven spirited children who grew up with strong roots in Hickory Plains, Des Arc, and Beebe, Arkansas.
John’s early years were filled with adventures in the woods and making lively mischief with his siblings. His sister Wilma fondly remembered him as the “fair-haired child” who could charm his way out of just about anything, saying, “Even I thought he was the cutest little kid I’d ever seen.”
Though he had a knack for harmless tricks, John was also the heart of the family—an anchor who stayed closely connected to his siblings and made sure everyone kept in touch. His love for his family was a quiet, steady force throughout his life.
John built his career as a skilled mechanic in Corona, California. He enjoyed changing out engines, transmissions, and other mechanical items—and his brothers were always trying to get him to fix their vehicles. In the 1990s, he and his brother Jake made their home on Crow Mountain in Russellville, where they lived for many fulfilling years surrounded by nature and community.
A true outdoorsman, John found peace and joy in squirrel hunting, fishing, and boating. In retirement, he was most content working on the farm. Even when life presented new physical challenges, John’s determination never wavered—he gardened from the ground and continued mowing his sprawling lawn thanks to a specially adapted tractor, courtesy of a caring neighbor.
John was a man of quiet strength, gentle humor, and deep loyalty. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Lou and Wilma, and is lovingly remembered by his brothers Jake, Albert, Tom, and Jim; his nephews Bill, Michael, Jonathon, and Rob; and his niece, Debra.
John Cox lived a life of simplicity, connection, and heart. He will be deeply missed—and joyfully remembered—for the love he shared and the legacy he leaves behind.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Smith-Westbrook Funeral Home, 404 Dewitt Henry Drive, Beebe, AR 72012. All who knew John are welcome to attend and celebrate his life.
