Johnie Allen Hunter, 78, of Malvern, Arkansas passed away May 2, 2016. He was born April 8, 1938 in Boyle, Mississippi to the late John S. and Margaree Hill Hunter. Johnie leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife, Rebecca Hunter of Malvern, Arkansas; son, Gregory Hunter of California; step-daughters, Jerelyn Estorpe and Johuanna Estorpe; sisters, Barbara Nichols of California and Mary Hill of Illinois; cousin, William Hunter of California; and many other family members, friends, and co-pilots who loved Johnie and will miss him always. Johnie was the founder of West Airlines. He was the president of Blair-Air Management which offered private chartered flights for companies and individuals. Johnie served as the Chief of the Bay Area Black Pilots Association. Johnie was bitten by the flying bug while in his high-school years. He earned his wings performing chores around the airport. He attended the University of Pacific at Stockton, California and worked as a longshoreman and dock loading supervisor until he found a job as a pilot. He was an executive pilot for Wilcott Ranches of American in Cartage, Texas and later became a pilot for Arbesco Air Freight, one of the black owned flying services. He formed his own air charter company in Oakland, California called Blair Ari Charter and Taxi Service in 1968. He operated there and in the Carribeans. After 28 years of flying, Johnie gave up aviation for awhile to pursue his interest in Hollistic Living. He taught positive mental motivation and positive living to adults and youths in Oakland. Johnie holds an ATP rating with more than 14,000 hours logged. He was also the first African-Ameican pilot for Federal Express and flew 727's for many years. Memorial service will be held at 12:00 Noon at Smith-Benton Funeral Home, 322 N. Market Street, Benton, AR 72015. Reception visitation will follow service until 2:00 PM.
