Listen to Obituary

Joseph Newton King, Jr., affectionately known as “Joe,” was born on November 20, 1944, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, to the late Joseph Newton King, Sr., and Dorothy Rena Robertson King. He passed away peacefully at home in Benton, Arkansas, on May 14, 2025.

A proud American, Joe served his country with honor in the United States Navy as a member of squadron VP-48. His time in the Navy instilled in him a deep sense of duty, loyalty, and resilience—qualities he carried with him throughout his life.

Joe had a deep love for the outdoors and a spirit of adventure. He found joy and peace in hunting, fishing, and riding Harleys, especially when shared with family and lifelong friends. Those who knew him remember a man of quiet strength, firm values, and a genuine appreciation for life’s simple pleasures.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his beloved son, Joseph Newton King III ("Joey"), and his stepson, Charles Edward Fitzhugh ("Chuckie").

He is survived by his devoted wife, Diane King; daughters Mandy Shutt, Samantha Argetsinger (Tim), and Cindy Fitzhugh; his brother, Mike King (Becky); 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family members and friends who will continue to carry his memory in their hearts.

To honor and celebrate Joe’s life, a visitation will be held on Monday, May 19, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Smith Benton Funeral Home, 322 N. Market St., Benton, AR 72015. A funeral service will be held at the same location the following morning, Tuesday, May 20th, at 10:00 AM, followed by burial at 12:00 PM at Graham Cemetery, 7849 Hwy 67, Benton, AR 72015. Dr. David Brewer will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in Joe’s honor.

Pallbearer honors will be carried by Dustin King, Larry Kyzer, Paul Shutt, Jimmy Ostie, Trevor Rowland, and Dakota Killion. Honorary pallbearers include Joey King, Buck King, Mya Fitzhugh, and Macie Reap.

Joe will be remembered as an amazing husband, a devoted father, a proud grandfather, and a loyal friend. His presence was steady, his heart generous, and his love for those around him unwavering. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, kindness, and quiet wisdom that will live on in all who knew him.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Hospice Home Care for the exceptional compassion and support shown to Joe during his final days. Your kindness and care will never be forgotten.
