Joyce Dillon Spencer passed away on September 24, 2012 at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. She was 86 years old. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, William R. "Gick" Spencer, Sr. and their son, William R. "Bill" Spencer, Jr. She was also preceded in death by her two beloved sisters, Arbie Callis and Ila Byrd, both of Little Rock. She is survived by her four grandchildren, William R. "Spence" Spencer III, of Tampa, FL, April Spencer Wyatt of Valdese, NC, Austin T. Spencer of Fayetteville, AR and Taylor D. Spencer of Little Rock. She is also survived by her five great-grandchildren, Lauren Spencer, Carter Wyatt, Samuel Spencer, Thomas Spencer and Autumn Wyatt.
Joyce Spencer was born on February 20, 1926 in Selmer, Tennessee to John and Allie Dillon. She graduated with honors and ahead of schedule from Little Rock High School. She then immediately worked for several years at the School Board here in Little Rock. In 1951, Joyce starting working for the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department and her career spanned over 30 years of service. In her final position, she served as the Executive Secretary to the Highway Commissioner before retiring in March, 1984.
Joyce was a life-long member of the First Church of God, Little Rock and over the years mentored dozens of young people on the importance of memorizing crucial portions of the Bible in order to grow in their relationship with Jesus. In her latter years, she attended Community Park Church in Bryant. Joyce will be greatly missed by her family and friends who loved her so much.
Visitation will be Wednesday, September 26 from 6-8 p.m. at Little Rock Funeral Home, 8801 Knoedl Ct. (NW corner I-630 and Barrow Rd.). The funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 27 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, with Rev. Wayne Putman officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Little Rock.
