Kathy Moorman Nickels passed away on July 6, 2026, in North Little Rock, Arkansas, at the age of 76. Born on April 4, 1950, in Prescott, Arkansas, growing up in Okolona, Arkansas, Kathy lived a life distinguished by compassion, integrity, advocacy and devotion.

Kathy’s life was beautifully marked by enduring relationships and deep-rooted connections. She is survived by her beloved husband of 56 years, James Nickels; her children, Laura “Kris” Smith (Keith), Justin Nickels (Mallory). Kathy’s legacy continues through her cherished grandsons, Grant Smith and Trent Smith. She also leaves behind her brother, Stan Moorman (Cyndi), her sister, Marian Baumgardner (Deryl), and her sister-in-law Coleen Moorman, along with multiple nieces and nephews with a host of extended family and friends who will miss her dearly.

She is preceded in death by her brother, David Moorman, and her parents Lemuel Moorman and Betty Jo Hardin Moorman.

A woman of deep faith, Kathy was a member of North Little Rock First United Methodist Church. She attended Henderson State University where she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Education.

As an elementary school librarian, she turned her lifelong love for reading into a mission, advocating fiercely for education and shaping the minds of countless children. Her commitment to the school system extended far beyond the library walls; she was a staunch supporter of her fellow educators through her dedicated involvement with the Arkansas Education Association and the Pulaski Association of Classroom Teachers.

When she wasn’t buried in a good book or lost in the rhythm of her favorite music, Kathy found joy in the beauty of the everyday. She was an avid collector, surrounded by a cherished collection of angels and the bright, cheerful hues of her beloved Fiesta dishware.

Kathy Nickels will be remembered for her wit, humor, and love of playing a game of scrabble. Along with her gentle spirit, unwavering dedication to her family, and the positive impact she had on everyone whose lives she touched. Her legacy lives on in her children, grandchildren, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
