Listen to Obituary

Leon Ricks was born on January 27, 1934, in Marche, Arkansas, to the late Ulysses and Aquilla Ricks. He was the oldest of thirteen children, and from an early age, Leon carried many responsibilities within the household — a trait that remained with him throughout his life.

Leon attended Pulaski County Training High School. After graduating, he joined the U.S. Army, where he proudly served two years in Korea. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home and met the love of his life, Rosetta Green. Together, they raised three children: Kevin, Ken, and Patricia.

Leon later attended State College of Arkansas in Conway, majoring in Physical Therapy Education. He went on to dedicate thirty years of service to Fort Roots VA Hospital, working in the therapy wing. In addition to his medical career, Leon was exceptionally skilled in carpentry. His passion for the craft led him to mentor and train a crew of men who developed their skills through his teaching and leadership. A hardworking and devoted provider, Leon maintained two jobs throughout much of his career. He also took great pride in keeping one of the most beautiful lawns in his community.

Leon was known for many talents, including his ability in the kitchen. He was a wonderful cook and baker, especially famous for his sweet potato pies and pound cakes.

A faithful and dedicated Christian, Leon served his church as Sunday School Superintendent for several years and was deeply knowledgeable in Bible studies. He later became a devoted member of Levy Church of Christ, where he remained a faithful member for the rest of his life.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Ulysses and Aquilla Ricks; and his siblings, Bobbie Jean, Booker, Ulysses Jr., Charlie (Veria), and Billy.

Leon leaves to cherish his memory his children: Kevin (Gwen), Ken, Patricia, and Vivian (Ralph); five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his siblings: Theartis (Marion), Lois (Melvin), Jethro (Carol), Carrie “Pat,” Alfonso (Sharon), Tommy, and Donald Wayne (Angela); his sister-in-law, Juanita; his special niece, Linda Fisher; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
