Lois Scott

Lois Maxine McElroy Scott, 78, of Little Rock, a retired school teacher, died Thursday, September 14th. She was born in Little Rock on June 14, 1939 to the late Rev. E.O. and Floy Ward McElroy and was the wife of 56 years of George Kelly Scott, Sr.

Maxine grew up in North Little Rock, where she attended high school. She graduated from Arkansas State Teachers College, now the University of Central Arkansas, with a BSE in English and earned her MS in Library Science. Maxine worked as a teacher in various elementary and secondary schools across the state as an English teacher and later as a Librarian.

She was a doting mother of a daughter and two sons, and grandmother to seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was the beloved "Mackie" to her two younger sisters, Joyce Lorraine Shaw and Patricia (Trish) Whitaker. Maxine loved to read, and was often seen with a book in her hand in addition to a trademark smile on her face. Her earliest school memory was that reading "opened a whole new world to me." Maxine also loved flowers and was fondest of the iris, just ahead of roses and gardenias. She was a member of the Arkansas Iris Society, as well as the Arkansas Teachers Association. She enjoyed playing with her grandchildren and watching them explore and learn new things.

Daughter of a Baptist minister, Maxine regularly attended church and her favorite Bible passages were Luke 2, the story of the birth of her Lord and Savior and Corinthians I, chapter 13. Her life symbolized the meaning of the message of faith, hope and love.

In addition to her parents, Maxine is preceded in death by her sisters Joyce Lorraine Shaw and Helen McElroy and two brothers, Edward McElroy and James McElroy. Survivors include her husband, George Kelly Scott, Sr., of Little Rock, daughter Shannon Karpoff (Matthew) of Little Rock, sons George Kelly Scott, Jr. of Branson, MO and Daniel Nathan Scott of North Little Rock. Grandchildren Danielle (Scott) McElroy, Matthew Karpoff, Alex Karpoff, Michael Scott, Kawlija Scott, Jacoah Scott and Nakira Scott; two great-grandchildren; and sister, Patricia Whitaker (Bo).
