Lowell Eugene "Red" Street of Donaldson passed away on Christmas Eve 2005. He was born May 30, 1925, the oldest of nine children of Minnie Street in Grantsburg, Illinois. He joined the Navy in 1942 at the age of 17, where he served on the battleship USS Dickens in the Aleutian Islands during the Japanese invasion. He participated at Iwo Jima on D-Day, February 19, 1945 and proudly acknowledged the legendary fact that the original flag raised on Iwo Jima came from his ship. The photo taken of the raising of the flag was done a few hours later with a larger flag being used.
After an honorable discharge, he returned home where he met and married his wife of 58 years Virginia Mae Glass in Metropolis, Illinois. They have two children, Michael Eugene Street of Abilene, Texas and Patricia Kay Banks of San Manuel, Arizona.
After a stint of truck driving, he discovered Arizona where he became a true cowboy as the ranch foreman of Vistoso Ranch in Tucson and later moving to Rancho Mi Sueno in Oracle, Arizona. Two years later, he began working at Magma Copper Company in San Manuel, Arizona- the number one producer of copper in the world. Working as a heavy equipment operator for 25 years, he retired in 1986 where upon they purchased a home in Donaldson, Arkansas and enjoyed a peaceful retirement.
Preceded in death by his mother, Minnie Street and survived by his wife, Virginia Street, son Michael, daughter Pat, grandchildren Catherine, Christina, Michael, Jimmy, Melissa and David, 14 great-grandchildren, two sisters and six brothers.
Funeral services with military honors will be at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, December 29, 2005 at Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home in Arkadelphia. Interment will be in Jones Cemetery at Brown Springs. Visitation will be 6-8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
