Loyal Abernathy, age 73, of Mount Ida, passed away on Wednesday, August 10, 2011, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on July 18, 1938, in the Hogjaw Community near Oden, the son of Otis Abernathy and Almeda Tarkington Abernathy. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Gerald Abernathy and Orlin "Red" Abernathy. He was a businessman, owner of a ready mix concrete business and Abernathy Sand & Gravel earlier in life. Later, he owned his own construction business, building roads for Weyerhaeuser and the U.S. Forest Service. He loved his work and always wanted it to be perfect. He was a proud member of Faith Tabernacle Church and his best loved hobby was traveling in his motor home. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Hettie Abernathy; his son, Jimmy Abernathy; his daughter, Janice Vaughn, and her husband, Mike, all of Mount Ida; five grandchildren, Ashley Cox, Brad Abernathy, "Gus" Cox, Andrew Vaughn and his wife, Heather, and Meghan Vaughn; two great-grandchildren, Kaid Vaughn and Zach Vaughn; two sisters, Jean Breashears, and her husband, G.A. of Story and Edith Young, and her husband, Ronnie of Mount Ida; one sister-in-law, Alma Abernathy of Mount Ida; nieces, nephews and a whole host of wonderful friends. Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 13, 2011, at Faith Tabernacle Church with Bros. Paul Burke, Kyle Goss, Sr. and Harold Vaughn officiating. Visitation will be held Friday evening, 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, at Faith Tabernacle Church. Interment will be in the Mount Olive Cemetery, in the Hogjaw community, under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood. Pallbearers will be L.J. Warneke, Joe Hamilton, Wade Abernathy, Sr., Alton Abernathy, Stan Pipkin and Clois Ledbetter. Honorary pallbearers will be Donnie Noles, Ronnie Chambers, Eugene Mayberry, R. H. "Bud" Hill, Lee Simpson, Clovis Ledbetter, Shelton Ledbetter, Shelby Fryar, Stan Miller, Marty Mayberry, Jody Hamilton, Wade Abernathy, Jr., Hugh Demby and Ronald Cescaline.
