Mary Evelyn Newman Walker, our earthly angel, went to her heavenly home on Sunday, April 19, 2026. Mary Evelyn was born on March 17, 1924, to Owen Newman and Eva Lee Greer Newman of Romance, Arkansas. She was the youngest of three children; her brother Cleon and sister Minnie Lee attended the community school; however, Mary Evelyn wasn’t old enough to attend school, but she kept slipping off and going to school. Her father made several trips to school to bring her home. After numerous trips to bring her home, her father and the teacher agreed it was best to let her start her education early.
“He who finds a good thing, obtains favor from the Lord.” Proverbs 18:22 Mary Evelyn found the love of her life in Romance, Arkansas, Wayne Walker. They were married on October 18, 1941, for fifty-three and a half years until Wayne’s death April 9, 1995. They had one daughter, Toma Jane Walker.
Proverbs 31:28. “Her children rise up and call her blessed.” There was always a place at the table for an extra guest at the Walker home. Mary Evelyn worked alongside Wayne in the hay field, the dairy barn and garden. She mowed her lawn for the last time at the age of 98.
Mary Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Minnie Lee Newman Jobe, brother Cleon Newman and her husband Wayne Walker. She is survived by her daughter Toma Jane Walker of Romance, many nieces, nephews and friends. Mary Evelyn was lovingly called, Mother, Sister, Auntie, Aunt Mary, Aunt Jane and MeMe.
