Mary Weeks

Mary Elizabeth Weeks passed away peacefully on May 16, 2024, with her daughter and son by her side. She was born in Memphis, Tennessee May 28, 1940, to Tuell Andrew White, Sr. and Margaret White.

Mary grew up in Monticello, Arkansas, and moved to Little Rock in 1956. Mary attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and later graduated from University of Arkansas at Little Rock with a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education. She worked for thirty-four years as a teacher and later principal at Arkansas School for the Blind. Mary also served on the Arkansas School for the Blind Board of Directors where she was instrumental in helping the school with their investments and fought tirelessly for better pay for teachers.

As a single parent, Mary loved camping and canoeing with her children. This love for the outdoors eventually led to her involvement with the Sierra Club. She served on the Sierra Club’s Arkansas Chapter Executive Committee through most of the 1990s where she was a spark plug and vocal advocate for a broad spectrum of environmental programs and club development efforts. Mary was selected to present the Sierra Club’s national endorsement to Governor Bill Clinton and U.S Senator Al Gore at Pinnacle State Park when they were running for President and Vice President in 1993, and she was later invited to the White House in appreciation for her work and support. Her last environmental achievement was assisting in removing the CAFO hog farm that was impacting the Buffalo River watershed.

She is survived by her two children, Don Paul Weeks, Jr. (Chandra) of Colorado and Mary Margaret Levy (Edwin) of Arkansas; and her six grandchildren, Brittany Jeanne Weeks, Morgan Elizabeth Weeks, Joseph Watkins Levy, Daniel Ellis Levy, Matthew Cromwell Levy, Joshua Thompson Levy, as well as a host of extended family and friends.

We will have a celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sierra Club’s Arkansas Chapter at sc.org/ARForward2023 or Buffalo River Watershed Alliance at buffaloriveralliance.org.
