Merwin Gray

Merwin Gray, beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on August 7, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on May 5, 1934, Merwin lived a life marked by profound integrity, unwavering faith, and an infectious sense of humor that brought joy to all who knew him.

After attending Lake Hamilton School District, Merwin went on to build a rich and multifaceted life. He dedicated many years to his craft as a skilled carpenter and found fulfillment in his calling as a pastor. Merwin and his late wife, Thelma, opened their hearts and their home as foster parents, nurturing the lives of many and creating a legacy of compassion and service. Some of his proudest accomplishments were serving as a pastor at Hilltop church as well as associate pastor at Midway Missionary Baptist Church, where he offered guidance, wisdom, and a steadfast example of faith to his community.

Merwin’s character was defined by honesty, thankfulness, and wit. He was a man of God whose faith shaped every aspect of his life, yet he never missed an opportunity to lighten the mood with a well-timed prank or a burst of playful exuberance. Family was always at the heart of Merwin’s world. He was known for his steadfast presence at family gatherings and for the countless hours spent sharing laughter, music, and card games—especially the weekly round of 3-13 after dinner with the kids. Thanksgiving held a special place in Merwin’s heart. He delighted in declaring that while every other day of the year belonged to his children, Thanksgiving was his alone to celebrate with them—a tradition and sentiment cherished by all.

Music brought Merwin great joy, and he was happiest with an instrument in his hands, filling his home and the hearts of loved ones with melody. When not making music or sharing stories, he found peace by the water, fishing and enjoying the simple beauty of nature.

On February 1, 1953, Merwin married Thelma, the love of his life. Their partnership was a testament to the enduring power of love, with Merwin's spirited and exuberant personality beautifully balanced by Thelma's calm and reserved nature. Together, they raised a family rooted in devotion, laughter, and respect.

Merwin is survived by his sons, Ronald Gray, Tracey Gray (Hannah); daughters, Faye Manees (David), Juanita Buckmaster (Alan); his brother, Danny Gray (Kathy); his sister, Zola Chitwood; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; extended family members, and many friends.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Thelma Gray; his father, Herbert Gray; his mother, Martha Ann Sanders; sisters, Oleta White, Iris Byrd, and Barbra Racy; and brothers, Myron Gray and Douglas Gray.

The family will receive friends for visitation on Monday, August 11, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. at Smith Family Funeral Home in Hot Springs, Arkansas (2205 Airport Road, Hot Springs, AR 71913) interment will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery. 

Pallbearers will be: Tracey Gray, Fire Marshall Addison Dunn, Fire Marshall Josh KinCannon, Captain Josh Lacy, Captain Blake Harmon, Driver Ty Dupre.

Merwin Gray leaves behind a legacy of kindness, faith, and laughter. His memory will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know him.
